The Sugar bed by Malerba distills nearly eight decades of Italian bedroom craftsmanship into a single, sculptural form. Founded in 1946 by brothers Antonio and Armando in northern Italy, Malerba has refined the art of lacquered wood and upholstered silhouettes across generations. Handcrafted in Italy, this designer Italian bed brings that accumulated savoir-faire into a contemporary frame shaped by curves rather than convention.
The headboard is the quiet centrepiece — hand-tufted with deliberate restraint, its surface rhythm catching light differently as the day turns. Beneath it, a curved frame in lacquered wood arcs without a single sharp edge, its finish applied by hand in layers that deepen over time rather than deteriorate. The marriage of solid wood joinery and soft upholstery creates a tension between architecture and comfort, each element holding the other in balance.
At 225.8 × 233.0 × 105.0 cm, the Sugar accommodates a king-size mattress and commands a master bedroom without overwhelming it. The tufted headboard doubles as an ergonomic backrest for evening reading, while the sweeping frame lends itself to contemporary, transitional, or classically appointed interiors. Malerba offers the headboard in a curated range of fabrics and leathers, with lacquer colours available on request to align with existing architectural details or a designer's specific palette.

Frequently asked questions
Can the lacquer colour and headboard fabric be customized to match an existing scheme?
Yes. Malerba's workshop can match lacquer tones to specific references, and the headboard is available across their full textile and leather range. Contact us with your project details for lead times and sampling.
How should the tufted headboard and lacquered frame be maintained?
Vacuum the upholstery monthly using a soft brush attachment and schedule professional cleaning once a year. The lacquered frame needs only a dry microfibre cloth to preserve its finish.
